All About Town Lake
Austin, Texas, is well-known for its natural beauty in an urban setting thanks to attractions like Town Lake Metropolitan Park.
History
Upon construction of the Longhorn Dam in the 1960s, the current location of Town Lake Metropolitan Park was transformed from an eroded, barren area into landscape appropriate for a park. A team, spearheaded by Lady Bird Johnson, worked to improve the lake edge with trails and park spaces for the public. This park and those nearby continue to be supported by the community.
Location
Town Lake Metropolitan Park spans the shore of the Colorado River near the Tom Miller Dam. Zilker Park is just across the water to the west. The closest main roads are Barton Springs Road and South Lamar Boulevard. The Lamar Boulevard Bridge is visible from the park, which is less than one mile from the South Mopac Expressway.
Park Features
Like many parks in Austin, Town Lake Metropolitan Park hosts excellent walking/biking/running trails. One of the best trails in Austin, Lady Bird Lake Trail, winds through the park. The park also has facilities for baseball games and parking.
Neighborhood Details
Town Lake Metropolitan Park is walking distance to a number of recreational and dining facilities. The most popular nearby restaurant is Chuy’s, a well-known Tex-Mex eatery. Also convenient to the park are Baby Acapulco, Schlotszky’s, Paggi House, Lift Café and Taco Cabana. More shopping and dining is available just across the river. Leaf Salad, Lambert’s Downtown BBQ and Jo’s Coffee Downtown are all walking distance from the park, as are several boutique shops.
The park is close to several well-known Austin sights. The famous Congress Avenue Bridge, where a swarm of bats emerges every evening at dusk, is near the park. Town Lake Metropolitan Park also offers attractive views of Downtown Austin, including Austin City Hall just across the river. Zilker Park, which borders Town Lake Memorial Park to the west, offers a variety of recreational activities in addition to hosting popular events (such as the Austin City Limits music festival) throughout the year.
Without a doubt, Town Lake Metropolitan Park helps make Austin one of the United States’ best places to live and an excellent spot to visit.
