Located near downtown Austin, the Darrell K. Royal Stadium Memorial Stadium is located at 2100 San Jacinto Boulevard. It was built in 1924 by the University of Texas to honor the nearly 6,000 Texans who lost their lives in World War I. The stadium was later renamed to honor legendary University of Texas football head coach Darrell K. Royal who lead the Longhorns to three national titles and 11 conference championships.
The area around the Darrell K. Royal Stadium Memorial Stadium features many attractions that football fans will enjoy visiting before or after a Texas Longhorns football game.
--For example, there are several locally owned diners that are located about three blocks away from the stadium on Congress Avenue and Duval Street. These diners usually offer patrons a nice selection of Southwestern US fare and legendary Texas-style BBQ. However, there is also a very nice Tex-Mex restaurant located near the stadiums’ main entrance that serves traditional Mexican dishes.
In addition, be sure to visit the nearby 6th Street neighborhood to visit one of the 40 shops that dot the area. These shops include antique stores, southwestern art galleries. There are also two local supermarkets in the neighborhood that offer customers a great selection of foods and drinks.

The easiest way to travel to the stadium is to use Austin’s light rail system to travel to the downtown area.
Austin’s light rail system features a stop that is located about 6 blocks north of the stadium at the Austin Convention Center on 4th Street.
Once you stop at the station, wait for one of the Route 7, 420,421 or 422 buses that stop at the station. The buses stop in front of the stadium on game days during the season. During the off-season, the buses stop about 4 blocks west of the stadium on San Jacinto Boulevard.
Finally, buses and trains stop at the Downtown station about every 10 minutes during the football season when the Longhorns play a home game. Otherwise, they stop at the Downtown Station every 15 minutes during the week and about every 20 minutes during holidays and weekends.
