Austin Convention Center
The Austin Convention Center is located in the heart of the capital of Texas, one of the most affordable cities in America. The convention center has a convenient downtown location, between the shores of Town Lake and historic Sixth Street. It has easy access to I-35 and is a short distance from 5,500 downtown hotel rooms.
The Neal Kocurek Memorial Austin Convention Center
The Neal Kocurek Memorial Austin Convention Center, located between the shores of Lady Bird Lake and well-loved Sixth Street, hosts everything from trade shows to large-scale breakfasts for over 1,000 cowboys during rodeo season. The Texas Rollergirls even call the Convention Center home! The center is open for booking year round, and hosts gatherings with as few as 10 people and as many as several thousand.
The idea for the Austin Convention Center hatched in 1983, as civic leaders became worried that the city was losing out on revenue from business convention business because of their small facility. Putting their heads together, a $35 million center was conceptually assembled, and several sites were considered. Finally, in 1989, three years of construction began, leading to a grand opening on the Fourth of July, 1992. In September of 1999 the center underwent even more construction, to expand it to its current gargantuan size of 881,000 square feet from 441,000. After almost doubling in size, the Austin Convention Center reopened on May 18, 2002. The mammoth building’s namesake is one W. Neal Kocurek, a force in the community for rallying support for the center’s construction, who passed away in 2004.
The Center today boasts beautiful glass facades, providing an un-stifling atmosphere and picturesque views of the city. Also, the building was constructed with an eye towards local production and sustainability, using only Texas limestone and granite. Sprawling over six city blocks and 881,000 square feet, the Center offers 246, 097 square feet of exhibit space, unimpeded by any intrusive columns or visible supports. When its pleasure rather than business occupying the center, the center’s Grand Ballroom can be utilized, one of the largest in Texas -there’s plenty of room for some serious dancing in its 43,300 square foot area!
Nearby bustling downtown Austin, business travelers have access to thousands of hotel rooms, fine and local-flavor dining, one of the nation’s finest independent music scenes, and a variety of night life. The Austin Convention Center is a staple of the downtown scene, and a point of pride for the entire city.
